my sweet son!
a day at the zoo....
the scientists...
she LOVED the snakes. and getting at eye level with the animals.
a tired girl on the safari bus
running on the beach.
yesterday, we went to the zoo with grandpa, and then jamey had his one year check up. it was actually scheduled for his birthday, but they called a few weeks ago to change it. something about the doctor being out of town (this is also the doctor i LOVE, but wait over 2 hours for EVERY TIME.). so, we went yesterday.
jamey was VERY TIRED. he hadn't slept at the zoo, and screamed the whole 20 minutes to the doctor, falling asleep only as we pulled into the parking garage. he was in his infant carrier, because we took daddy's car from the zoo. so, i carried him in that way, hoping to keep him asleep. OF COURSE, we were called in within five minutes of being there, and i had to wake him up. not a fan!!!
the med student came in to do a history and physical and then would report to the doctor. she started with, "so, we're here for an 11 month check up?". um, no, 1 year. "well, it says 11 months". um, he'll be a year in 5 days. "okay".
a lesson... if you are going to come in, at least make it look like you know what you are talking about. case in point... READ the chart. or maybe even scan over the last visit. it can probably tell you a lot. such as, james has club feet and had casts and surgery to correct it. then, when you ask if there is significant medical history, you don't feel stupid when i say "club feet", and you look at the previous page and realize it's written ALL OVER that page!!!
james had to have a finger stick to get blood to check his iron. last time, it was a little low. he looked at the girl (and i think she was about 15) skeptically, but let her do the whole thing. no tears, until the girl walked out the door. don't know if it was stoicism or sad that she was leaving!!!
james is 20 pounds, 3.5 ounces (that's the 50th percentile) and 29 3/4 inches (only grew an inch since last time, and puts him around 15th percentile...). otherwise, james looks awesome! they were very happy with him, and i was happy to be out of there in an hour!
so, the med student had to go over all james does. and shouldn't do. such as be forward facing in his carseat. (by the way, he has WAY outgrown his infant seat. my arm was KILLING me after carrying it. and his feet hang off) but, one week facing forward should be okay. or that ***gasp*** he gets a bottle of formula at night (again, that has started this weekend. *gasp*, he has formula and is pretty much done nursing...). ***gasp*** i also don't offer him OR his sister a big kid cup very often. i stick to sippy cups. the spill-proof ones. and on what planet does a one year old drink out of a big kid cup?? ***gasp*** i will continue to give my kids sippy cups. (for the record, nora can do the other kind of cups occasionally...)
me and the doctors don't always see eye to eye on things. the book and real life are two different things. i don't see college age kids with sippy cups, unless you count camelback water bottles. so, i think my kids will be okay.
all in all, a great visit!
