oh-io!!!

down to the falls...

waterfalls....

kids playing...

sleepy big boy!!!

trying to get a pic... and this kid just had to be in it!!

these three....

born a day apart.  her daddy was his daddy's best friend in middle school....

other friends!!!

c loved meeting his dog!!!!

i was just telling someone this week that i get sick of responding to the "oh, you have your hands full" comments.  i have four kids.  and sometimes, they are a crazy bunch.  i feel like everyone is always watching us, just because there are so many of us.  and they are close in age.  and they can be a bit wild.  (namely my two middle boys...)  i am (mostly) okay with all that.

i want my kids to be well behaved.  (i mean, have you met a mom who DOESN'T want that?)  and i try hard.  but, there is ONE of me, and FOUR of them.  and brandon requires my arms a lot of the time.  and one of the others is at a tough age, where being quiet, sitting still, hand holding, etc, is just HARD.  and it requires both of my arms sometimes.  so, if you did the math, that's 2 kids that need 4 arms.  and, sadly, i only have 2 arms.  so, someone is usually left to their own devices.

i will say, nora is an AMAZING help.  she will often hold her brother's hand so he's okay in the parking lot.  he listens to her well.  but, sometimes, we are just all crazy!

anyway, back to my original point.  we have four kids.  JUST FOUR.  WHOA, FOUR.  i know that's a lot for some people.  we have always wanted four.  and yet, i feel like i have to justify that to everyone i meet.  or even friends.  i find myself constantly saying "i always wanted four; i am the oldest of four and i LOVE it!".  or "yes, we have four, but we are DONE, want to see the scar?"

it's so silly... because i shouldn't have to justify it to ANYONE.  we decided (and even if we didn't decide) to have four kids.  and we can provide for all four.  there was some even some intentionality to our planning.  i.e.: no more than 2 in college at once.

yes, four is busy.  and i am sure that sometimes (maybe a lot of times), i look a little harried.  as much as i try NOT to!  and my hands ARE full.  but i want them to be.  i am thankful for each of my kids.  so, saying that only makes me feel like i am not doing a good job of raising my kids.  or that you are pointing out that they are acting like monkeys and not human kids.  and, usually, i already know that and am either embarrassed or desperately trying to fix it.

that said, i am sure that there are so many things i say, similar to that, without thinking that can bother someone.  so, i am sorry!!!  i really try not to!

12 July 2014

more on maine...

first sail of the season...

legos with uncle andrew!

a date with my hubby.  we got quite a few.  it was nice to have some alone time with him!!

who doesn't think these glasses are fun?

playing with our food...

the lake...

more from d's fishing trips!

a nice catch...  (and released...)

d got quite a few fishing trips in and the kids even learned to fish with him.

today, back in rhody...  we got up and daddy treated us to a nice breakfast at ihop!  it was lovely...  and then we decided to look for something free to do.  (kinda tired of spending money.  and we are morally opposed to PAYING to go to the beaches here.  cause you have to pay to park.  and i miss my free beaches!!!  okay, not really morally opposed, but just used to having our pick of free beaches...)

we decided to go walk around fort adams.  we happened upon a regatta.  and some friends we knew in san diego.  they invited us for lunch and the kids had a BLAST playing.  and we had so much fun catching up.  (we did know they lived here, just not that we would walk right by their house this morning!!)

11 July 2014

the lake

getting water...

reading.  nora loved reading with her aunties!

telling stories...

nap.  first nap in a big boy bed (cause he could climb in and out of his pack n play.)..

standing up on her tube...

the terror of the water front.  and not because of his speedo!  (we got lazy... )

swimming out to sea!

this kid (well, all 3 big ones) had such a blast, spending most of their waking hours in the water.  and if not in the water, down at the dock.  or eating.  cause it takes a lot of food to sustain that kind of energy!  chris got pretty daring in his swimming and the oldest two loved swimming out to the sail boat or just jumping off the dock.

today, the kids were asking how long my parents had lived in their house.  and why older people live in their houses for so long.  i had to tell them that it's normal to live in one house for quite a while.  that we are the odd ones...

one of my kids loved the idea that we get to keep moving.  one really didn't like that idea.

as for moving...  it's fun to see what i can create with my 3 pans and a knife.  i've made some good meals.  and we are being creative in our having fun!  loving the simplicity.  ironically, my devotions this morning featured a verse about being content in all circumstances.  i am so thankful for the contentment i have found recently.  God has been so graceful and made this time so fun!

i could have shipped our stuff sooner out of hawaii so it would be here by now.  but, i was by myself with four kids.  and i knew that would be tough.  here, d is home around 4pm, and i have so much help.  i would still do it this way (and i have given it a lot of thought!!!).  if it wasn't summer, i would reconsider.  but we play outside.  and have fun as a family.  i am cherishing this time!!

09 July 2014

working backwards...

sweet baby by the beach.

who me??

keeping an eye on his brother!

my new little sailor!  he loved being on the boat with grandpa.  mostly because grandpa told him a ton of stories.  he would make the up, but mostly it was greek mythology or shakespeare.  my well read kids!

and this kid.  in his glory.  he looks good driving a boat!!  and i love him....

they went to a wildlife park one day and got to see a bunch of cool animals!

on a rainy day, nora did a beauty spa for the ladies.  she did our hair, applied lip gloss and styled us with her new sarong!

nugget with auntie sarah!

with grandpa in north andover. and no, nora doesn't have glasses.  those are play ones!

we had a great time in maine.  and i am going to start there and work backwards with our pics of the last month!!!!

08 July 2014

a new adventure...

sweet berry farm.

we went raspberry picking today.

intent on finding the best raspberry.

he was great at it!!!

nora told me after that her eyes were closed.  and i just realized i didn't edit this pic, so it's all washed out.  but, man, did we have fun today!  b slept through the entire thing (i totally regretted not bringing the stroller!!!).  j complained that we were going to do this and he hated raspberries.  i finally told him to suck it up and i would buy him a lollipop if he stopped whining.  (great parenting, i know!)  i think he had the most fun, and then asked to try a raspberry.  and LOVED it!  a win for me!

we bought veggies for dinner and also a gluten free pound cake from the little market at the farm.  and put our raspberries and some whipped cream on top.  amazing.  the kids loved that they helped so much with dinner/dessert.

so much more to say and so many more pics about this last month.  it will come.  but for today, here you go!  it was a fun month, and a gift at that.  i loved having david around for so much of the time.  and bouncing from house to house.

tonight, i sit on our (uncovered) new couch, after we ate dinner outside on the chairs we have.  kids are in sleeping bags on the floor (chris is on a mattress we took from my parents...).  we are sleeping on an air mattress.  our food is cooked in on of three pots/pans.  we borrowed a knife from church.  we are using paper/plastic ware.

but it's fun.  and an adventure.  our stuff is supposed to arrive by july 29th.  we're hoping for a bit earlier!!!  the kids have the toys/activities they could fit in their backpacks.  they complain that they are bored occasionally, but for the most part are doing well.

it's weird/fun to be back in a place we have lived.  there is so much the same (or vaguely familiar) and so much that is different.  we weren't here for a summer last time, so that is  also fun!  (although, we have yet to make it to the beach!!)

there you go... time to go snuggle on our plasticy couch with my hubby!
