kohala coast...

the kona/kohala coast is unlike anything i had seen.  there are massive lava fields for as far as the eye can see.  and then, every so often, there are these little tufts of grass popping up.  and you can see a difference in the lava flows…  the fields change colors.

walking to see some petroglyphs near our hotel.  some over 500 years old.  they would make these petroglyphs waiting for war or permission to cross.

a lava "cave".  lava that collapsed.

then, there are areas that are are totally grown back.

driving up to the north shore.  the "original" king kamehameha 1.  this statue was commissioned in europe and the ship was sunk on it's way to hawaii.  another one was made quickly and put in honolulu.  when this one was recovered, years later, it was refurbished and brought to the big island. the birthplace of king kam.

and my cute hubs.

chilling at the resort.

waiting for our 40 minute plane ride.  it was so fun to be at an airport without kids!

driving.

in our jeep!  my sweet hubby upgraded me to a jeep…  and i think he had more fun with it than me!  it is my dream car!

more of the lava fields...

on our way up the kohala coast!

this was built in the 1400's.  a cool little settlement.

lapakahi state park.

we sat here and watched the whales.

trying to capture some of the whales!

pololu valley lookout.

quite a climb down.

but a beautiful, black sand beach at the bottom!

d went all the way down.  we decided that at 34 weeks pregnant, i might not be up for the climb out.  or just ridiculously slow!  so, i went almost halfway…  and then turned around.  that's where it got muddy.  and since i am so steady on my feet without mud….

more up on the north shore...

driving round the island.

coming down kohala mountain road.  past a bunch of farms.  it was so fun to see where so much of our beef comes from!!  (and grass fed, no less!!)

we stopped at "big island brewhaus" for lunch.  it's a mexican brewery with an art gallery type inside.

i mean, they truly brew it in the warehouse out back.

and again, totally locally grown food and grass fed beef.  it was good!

we sat at picnic tables in the fenced in back.

david had the GOLDEN SABBATH
8.0% abv  30 IBU  Style: Belgian Strong Golden Ale or Abbey Ale
A Belgian-style strong golden ale with a wondrous range of fruit flavors like plum, apricot, and cherry imparted by special Belgian yeast. Traditionally served in special goblets this style of beer can turn an ordinary lunch into an extraordinary event and a slow Sunday afternoon into a special Golden Sabbath.

the sink in the bathroom.  just thought it was too cute to pass up!

more at the resort…  laying at the pool, looking out to the ocean!

playing mini golf.  d beat me by a few strokes total, but i totally beat him on the back 9.
that was a first for me!!!

smiling and trying to find the sunset...

it was fairly overcast our whole week, but save the first day, we didn't have much rain.  and it didn't ruin our moods at all.

in the far distance of this pic, you can see haleakala… the volcano on maui.

more of our beach at the resort...

black lava beach and white pebbles.

sunset!  we found it!

and a hammock to lay in while we watched it!
