a birthday week...

nora and her "i obeyed on the plane" gift.

jamey and his said gift!!!

chris just looking studly!!!

chris and his spiky hair... just like daddy would do!

post bath drools...

ALLLLL... his chins!

we lit the candles on my cupcakes... and daddy called!  it was perfect timing.  i got to talk to my love and hear him sing to me!!!  couldn't have asked for a better gift!

my birthday breakfast!!!  g-free pancakes with strawberries!

my girls... after birthday dinner and a movie!  i am so thankful for these women in my life!!!

phew... today started with boot camp.  i was anxious.  and nervous.  and thought i would puke.  so i prayed for peace.  and pulled into the parking lot.  and there was a good friend from church.  ALSO on her first day of boot camp.  and she was nervous.  so we got to be together!!  it was so nice.

my arms currently hurt.  and they feel like they are going to hurt more soon.  but, the first day went well.  it's the good hurt.  and i am looking forward to more days!

after boot camp, we went to the focus meeting.  the kids talked to the auntie about daddy's deployment.  it was a good meeting.  we have one more meeting with her... then we graduate!  cause we are doing so well.

a lovely afternoon... nora asked me to sit and watch a movie with her.  so i did.  i have been working on loving my children.  and showing them that.  and doing what THEY need, not what i want to do.  (okay, not ALL the time... there are sometimes when things need to get done, or they can't get their way!!)  then, we played outside while i cleaned the garage a bit!

a quick run to target after dinner to pick up a printed picture for jamey's class tomorrow.  it took longer to get there and back then to actually get the pic!  phew... loading up three kids, driving, unloading them, paying $1.47 for a few pics, loading three kids back up, driving, unloading them.  almost not worth it!!  almost.

then came the COMPLETE. and TOTAL. meltdown.  that started with a request to put something away.  and ended in tears and begin told someone doesn't like me.  after MAJOR discussion, and time in her room, said child came in, unprompted, and apologized, and changed it.  HALLELUJAH!!!  i love when they get it!!!

our "bath" outside...

what nora has said is the best night of her life!!!

from last friday... helping me water the yard!!!

how is it that these kids look so big?

things you never want to hear your four year old say...

mommy, jamey went potty in the little potty.  i emptied it into the toilet for you.

actually, she did quite well.  she didn't spill a drop!  i am quite thankful for her helpfulness.  today, she put james in bed for his nap while i put christopher down.  awesome!

we are getting dinner made for us by a dear friend!  i am quite excited...  about her being here and dinner! and tomorrow is BOOT CAMP!!  here's to not walking the rest of the week!!!

28 April 2012

chris and i chilling at swim lessons...

i took the kids to see "chimpanzee" last weekend...

flowers from my parents.  they were beautiful and made my house smell so good!!

sweet baby boy in his smocked outfit.  he looked SO HANDSOME!  (don't mind the pink background!!!)

snuggling with his lovey...

more of the cute smocked outfit!  isn't he HUGE!  (nora was a little concerned that he was wearing a "dress".  it wasn't... it was a romper!)

my kids have been cracking me up recently.

yesterday, at lunch, and tonight at dinner, james will, unprompted, say "thank you mommy for this food".

this morning, nora got dressed and came in to show me her outfit.  it included a bathing suit top as her "bra".  under her shirt.  later today, she asked me what a bra was for.  i suppose i should be thankful for that!

jamey has been nursing his lovey on a regular schedule.  and putting him down for a nap.

they were playing yesterday morning.  james was jonah, and i think nora was the mom.  james walked in saying, "i'm a prophet".  nora said, "no, you are a jew".  james said, "no, i am a prophet of God".  nora said, "no, you are a jew.  that means you love God.".  i tried to explain that he could be a jewish prophet...    i suppose there are FAR worse things my children could be playing!!!

my family grew up playing "guessing men".  it consisted of my parents (usually my dad) coming up with a Bible character and giving us clues to guess who the man (or woman) was.  we have started doing this with my kids.  so today at lunch, james started doing guessing men for nora.  it was so cute.  and he would get so excited when she was right!  (i think the first clue was, "died on a cross for our sins")

after 13 hours of sleep for nora, we seem to be over the worst of the vog.  here's hoping!!!

gifts from afar....

i got a vitamix recently.  it has revolutionized my life!!  this is my pineapple juice.  awesome!

daddy had breakfast with us!

playing with new friends at the beach!!

loving time with my boy!

the drive home...  amazing.  i LOVE the windward side!

baby boy sleeping with the japanese sword his daddy sent him!!!

look closely above the houses.

we saw this rainbow the other day.  nora found it, actually.  it was STUNNING!!

like a sunset of a rainbow!

the boys on the floor...
my birthday present from david!!

we have this thing in hawaii called vog.  it's nasty.  and i think the "sickness" we have all had all winter might be partially credited to this.  EVERYONE i now right now is sick.  nora particularly!  she went to bed at 5pm.

i got to chat with my hubby last night.  it's always to hear his voice!  we had a big outing today to the NEW whole foods in kailua.  and then lunch at z pizza (they do amazing gluten free pizza!!).  when we got home, two of the three children were melting down.  my sweet friend wonderfully stayed for the afternoon, so i didn't have to hold three children at once!  and, we planned a family room redo!  quite excited now!!

all three are in bed.  fingers crossed!

from david...

The Captain, XO, Conning Officer and others on the Bridge Wing during
our UNREP with USNS Walter S. Diehl.

This statue was pretty haunting as well.  Located at the "Hypocenter
Park," it gives the time and date of the detonation.  The Nagasaki
bomb, named "Fat Man," was dropped on August 9th, three days after
Hiroshima and the day after the USSR declared war on Japan.

This is a monument to the "26 Saints of Japan," who were crucified on
this spot in Nagasaki in 1597.  2 Portuguese priests and 24 Japanese
Christians were crucified for their faith, which had been outlawed in
Japan 10 years before.  They were canonized by the pope in 1862.

And while we were paying homage to the holy shrine of the 26 martyrs,
Dave Wagenborg, our CSO and a good buddy, took the opportunity to
attempt to slide down the railing of the steps.

ENS Dan Pappas, the most junior officer in the Wardroom, dances during
the UNREP while dressed as a Leprechaun.  This is a tradition that
goes back a long way in the Navy- since O'Kane is an Irish name, we
chose a Leprechaun outfit.  Our "breakaway" song is "Smells Like Teen
Spirit" by Nirvana.

They have Dunkin Donuts in Japan!

Life is so tough on deployment...massage chairs at the liberty center!
One of our sailors asked if we could get these for the ship...

At the Sasebo Train Station, getting ready to go to Nagasaki.

Me on the train to Nagasaki.

This is me at the spiral staircase entrance to the atomic bomb museum
in Nagasaki.

This monument behind me marks the "hypocenter," or ground zero, for
the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb detonation (it was actually an airburst 500
meters above this point).

There were many photos of the aftermath of the atomic bomb detonation,
but this one struck me as by far the most haunting.

Passing pallets from USNS Walter S. Diehl to O'Kane.
(how david, and all the crew, gets his mail, packages, etc!  here's hoping it's not swimming first!!  not to mention food, supplies...  that's a tiny line it's on!)

swim call just east of the mariana islands... 23,000 feet of water below him!!!

Fair winds and following seas from the Western Pacific and South China Sea!
When last I left you, we had been in SaseboJapan, for the second time.  We have since left the northern climes and headed south for the Straits of Malacca, the busiest waterway in the world.  If you ever doubt the importance of strategic sea lanes (roughly 90% of international commerce travels by sea), one look at a radar screen, or out of your bridge windows while approaching the Straits of Malacca will convince you how critical control of the seas are.  There are hundreds and hundreds of vessels (from supertankers and massive container ships to small ferries and fishing vessels) that transit through this narrow chokepoint between IndonesiaMalaysiaand Singapore every day.  It is always an impressive sight.

Previously, I promised some pictures from Japan- here are some pictures from the trip I took with Dave Wagenborg (our Combat Systems Officer) and Paul Duenas (our Chief Engineer) to Nagasaki, about an hour and a half train ride from Sasebo.  ObviouslyNagasaki is known, unfortunately, as the site that the second atomic bomb was dropped on August 9th, 1945- three days afterHiroshima and the day after the Soviet Union declared war on Japan.  They have a museum, a peace park, and a monument dedicated to the atomic bomb dropping.  It was certainly interesting to get a slice of history, and humbling enough to appreciate how devastating a weapon it really was.  There were a few other interesting parts of Nagasaki that we saw as well- such as the memorial to the “Twenty Six Saints of Japan”- Christians crucified for their outlawed faith back in the 16th century.  An interesting trip to an interesting place, likely something I will never get to see again (and topped off by some really good Indian food).

I have also included a couple of pictures of our Underway Replenishment (UNREP) with the USNS Walter S. Diehl.  While on deployment, we typically get fuel, food, mail, parts and ammunition via UNREP from an oiler or replenishment ship, although we can also get all these things in port.  Fuel is transferred via high pressure hose connections, and stores come over on pallets, which you can see in the pictures.  The ships are typically about 150-200 feet apart during these transfers, which require constant attention to detail in shiphandling.  It is definitely one of the more interesting things we do in the surface navy.  I also tried to send a video (alas, the file size was too large) or our most junior ensign dancing during the “breakaway” from the oiler (once all lines are passed back to the oiler and fueling/replenishment is complete, we speed up and turn away- this is called the breakaway).  We typically play a breakaway song and the most junior officer on the ship dances while dressed up as a leprechaun (to celebrate O’Kane’s Irish heritage).  Humiliating?  Maybe…but all in the name of Naval Tradition.

Love,
David

snuggling with his uncle james!!!

more kids...

we have been having fun.  and staying busy.

today, nora was telling me about a friend at church.  i didn't know who it was, so i asked some more about him.  she said, "he's not my friend yet.  but i am working on it".  it was so cute!!!

james chatted me up a storm the other night in bed.  i have been trying to really enjoy snuggling with them.

christopher is chatting up a storm.  period.  he loves the sound of his voice.  and i have realized, can hear. who knows what their tests will show when it's time to go again (in six months), but he turns to hear you. that's so encouraging!

i am good.  staying busy.  i have a bunch of project ideas to work on.  and one that is almost finished.  it's a present, so when they get it, you can see it!!!  now, time for me to wash the beach off me!!  we went to a new beach today...  so much fun!
